Better Letter Learning with the Three Strokes and a Bump

Beautiful rustic illustration of the Three Strokes and a Bump in their A-frame library looking at a rustic whiteboard that shows the four kinds of letter lines in red: straight, circle, diagonal and U-shaped.

Oh, Mommy...

I can name all 26 kids in my class. No problem! I can pick Sally out and remember her name because I know what she looks like. She has long, dark, curly hair, medium skin tone, green eyes ... yeah, really ... green eyes—and freckles. (I really like freckles!)

But I can’t name the 26 letters. It’s kinda hard to know each letter’s name when they all just look like a bunch of squiggly lines.

If I could BUILD the letters (I LOVE to build!), then, I’d really know what each letter looks like and remember its name.

But, if I could learn about the four kinds of letter lines ... and the lines each letter is made of ... and how a letter’s lines are arranged I'd be ready to write.

With Those Are the Strokes, Folks! children learn to identify the letters. And when little hands are ready, all they need to do is to draw the ines!

Uppercase Letter Identification the STEM Letter-Form Way

  • On their own, young children learn to identify 26 classmates quickly and easily.
  • With help, it takes one to two years for children to learn to identify 26 letters. Why?
For young children, letters are visually meaningless lines that make them difficult to distinguish and remember. Those Are the Strokes, Folks! STEM Letter-Form Learning brings visual meaning to the letters.
  • Children learn there are only four kinds of letter lines: straight, circle, diagonal, and U-shaped.
  • Together with the four letter line characters, Roddy, Roly, Slopey, and Bump, children build the letters.
When children know the four kinds of letter lines AND each letter's lines and how they are arranged, they are easier to distinguish and identify.
